Pre-conference East Tour – Ligonier, Goshen and Elkhart

  • Visit the historic brick section and original alignments in Ligonier
  • Visit the Old Bag Factory in Goshen – shop in the furniture, art, pottery, antique, and quilt shops
  • Visit the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart

Charter Bus Tour to Indianapolis via the Dixie Highway.

  • Stops at historic sites related to Carl Fisher and James Allison – Lincoln Highway Visionaries.
  • Tours include the extraordinary Crown Hill Cemetery, Millionaire Row (the homes of Allison and Fisher), Stutz Buildings, Monument Circle, and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum.
  • Lunch at the Athenaeum. Set in the historic 19th century Athenaeum Building downtown, The Rathskeller is reminiscent of both a quaint inn tucked in the Bavarian hills and a lively beer hall in Munich. Voted Best German Restaurant seven years in a row, even a true German feels at home here.
  • Wild and mild buses will be available to fit your personality!

A Day on the beautiful St. Joseph River!

  • This seminar day features a keynote speaker on national byways and an artist and authors’ reception – open to the general public free of charge.
  • Dedication of historical markers on the Lincoln Highway in downtown South Bend.
  • Special invitation event for LHA Life Members, dignitaries and 2009 LHA Conference Sponsors.
  • Twilight tour of the University of Notre Dame campus including the famous Grotto, touchdown Jesus, and the Golden Dome.

Friday, June 19, 2009
Lincoln Highway Day Parade through South Bend featuring the 90th Anniversary U.S. Military Cross Country Convoy organized by the Military Vehicle Preservation Association and the LHA.

  • The convoy will be departing Washington D.C. on June 10th, connecting with the LHA main route at Gettysburg, and arriving in South Bend on Thursday, June 18th.
  • Military vehicles will be staged for the public at the Studebaker National Museum and at the Howard Park Vietnam Veteran’s
    Memorial following the parade festivities.
  • Afternoon offers conference attendees free time to tour area attractions, shop, and dine at the many specialty shops in the twin cities of South Bend/Mishawaka.
  • The day will conclude with an Awards Banquet at Century Center.

Saturday, June 20, 2009
Breakfast buffet and annual membership meeting and door prizes at the Holiday Inn Ballroom.

Post conference Tour
Follow the military convoy west to the Illinois line.

  • Suggested stops include New Carlisle Viaduct, the Old Republic and the Lincoln Highway kiosk at City Hall on Michigan Street; restored train depot in La Porte; Bob’s BBQ at US 20 and State Road 2; Historic Mill at Deep River County Park; Valparaiso’s City Hall Lincoln Highway Monuments; shopping at Merrillville’s malls, and the Ideal Section-Henry Ostermann Monument at Schererville.
