Lincoln Highway Artifacts Now On Exhibit in La Porte
The La Porte County Historical Society received this medallion in 1999 from Ben Masek. The medallion was part of an original Lincoln Highway concrete marker at the intersection of CR 900 West and 1200 South. Within  the first two years, the post was struck but it remained until the 1930s when the road was widened using WPA workers. The medallion was retrieved, placed on a wooden base (seen in photograph) and hung in the Masek Family home until 1985. In April 2003, the La Porte County Historical Society was contacted by INDOT indicating they had discovered a Lincoln Highway marker in their yard. They asked if the museum would want it and of course, they accepted it. It was placed on display in the "downtown" museum. Since that time, the museum has relocated to 2405 Indiana Avenue. The marker and the medallion area on display on "Main Street" in the new facility. Next time you're traveling through La Porte, be sure to stop by to see these artifacts. Be sure to mention that that you're a Lincoln Highway fan and that you'd like to see the route marked through La Porte County.   [Photos courtesy Fern Eddy Schultz]

Visit the new history museum in La Porte at 2405 Indiana Avenue.  The Indiana Chapter of the LHA would like to thank the La Porte County History Museum for sharing these images and for placing the artifacts on display for the public to see. Efforts such as this make it possible for more people to learn about the historic coast-to-coast route named in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Thanks also to the Indiana Dept. of Transportation for preserving the concrete marker.

Thanks to the Masek Family for generously donating the medallion and sharing the story about the marker.
